Since we do this every year or so, here's a thread for our own MRFH Oscar Pool. Make your choices on here by Saturday night, and whoever comes closest to getting them all right will be able to put "MRFH 2004 Oscar Picks Champion" in their sigfile. Boasting rights.
The categories to select from are (we're not including all categories, just the biggies, enough to make the possibility of two people choosing all the same unlikely):
Best Picture Best Director Best Actor Best Supporting Actor Best Actress Best Supporting Actress Music (Score) Music (Song) Writing (Adapted Screenplay) Writing (Original Screenplay)

Eh, why not waste even more time:
-Best Picture: Lord of the Rings (Pete's getting it for all three) -Best Director: Lord of the Rings, for the same reason -Best Actor: Bill Murray -Best Supporting Actor: Tim Robbins -Best Actress: Charlize Theron (though I really wish Keisha Castle-Hughes would win, just like I rooted for Haley Joel Osment when he was nominated for supporting actor in The Sixth Sense) -Best Supporting Actress: Holly Hunter (I just really don't like Zelwegger) -Music (Score): Lord of the Rings -Music (Song): The Scarlett Tide (the only reason I'm picking this is because T-Bone Burnett was behind the O Brother soundtrack, but that didn't get any Oscar nominations for that) -Writing (Adapted Screenplay): Mystic River -Writing (Original Screenplay): Lost in Translation (sorry, Lissa)

And wow, Lissa, you got all but one of the major categories. My props to you.
At least I won the poll my dad , step-mom, and I have every year. I got 14 of the total winners (dad = 13, step-mom = 8). My best year was the year American Beauty came out--I correctly predicted all of the acting and screenplay categories, as well as best picture and director.

11 noms, 11 wins. Yee-ha! And no extended anti-American outbursts this year, either. But as happy as I am, there were no upsets at all this year. I would have liked to have seen Sophia Coppola get the Directing Oscar or the Iranian woman get the Supporting Actress just to shake things up a bit. But all in all, yee-ha.

Al I didn't realize LOTR won in every category it was nominated. It wasn't exactly anti-American (though I don't think Moore's speech last year was anti-American, if that's what you're referring to), but the acceptance speech for best documentary feature included some anti-Iraq war sentiment. When I got around to making my picks for my pool with my parents, I changed my best supporting actress pick to Shohreh Aghdashloo. I liked her and Ben Kingsley's characters the best in that movie, and for playing a part with limited English, she did a phenomenal job at giving a very sympathetic performance. Besides, as I've said, I'm no fan of Renee Zelwegger. I think her cheeks are plotting to take over the world, starting with her eyes.

Ahh, now I can laugh in the face of the guy who said LOTR wouldn't win anything. Though I am kinda disappointed with the song win...I thought "Into the West" was the weakest of the nominees. But without it LOTR wouldn't have tied with Ben Hur and Titanic for most Oscars.

Ultimate Revenge of the Geeks!!!!!! Whoohoo! On some levels, I'm a little disappointed with a few of the LOTR wins. I didn't like ANY of the Original Songs (even my actual pick). And I really thought Mystic River was the better script. (Might be better starting material. Sorry, but some of the lines that they had to deliver in LOTR were just pure cheese- and they're that way in the book, too.) But on the other hand, the clean sweep was pretty darn cool. And I can not tell you how happy I am that Sofia Coppola did NOT win Best Director. If it didn't go to PJ (who was wonderfully unpretentious, but couldn't he have done SOMETHING with his hair? Like, combed it? He and Aragorn must have the same stylist.), I wanted it to go to Clint Eastwood for Mystic River. And as disappointed as I was that there weren't any acting nominations, I'm kind of glad, too, because it was so cool LOTR swept, and I really think that Sean Penn and Tim Robbins still would have won, regardless. (And should have.) And WHAT was Uma Thurmon wearing? ? Liss

I was more concerned with Susan Sarandon falling out of her dress. Slut.
(And I mean that in a Rocky sense.)

Last night was my first end-to-end Oscar watching night in my life. I've seen bits of or the majority of previous Academy Awards, but last night was my first go at watching the whole thing. I was healthily amused to note that the total run time of the show was amazingly close to the run time of Return of the King. Coincidence, I'm sure.
Of course, I only watched the whole thing to see how well LotR would do. Well, no, that's not all, but it was the big reason. And I have to say, it's really nice to see Peter Jackson get his due. Were there a couple of lambs sacrificed to justify the Rings love-in? Sure. But three years' worth of "how could he not win?" are finally all paid up. That's very cool.
Favourite moments:
- seeing Billy Crystal back. The guy is a natural for this. - Michael Moore getting skooshed under the oliphaunt. I like Moore a lot, but that's good funny. - Blake Edwards' wheelchair crash. - watching Clint Eastwood's eternally frozen face try to react to these "emotion" things. - the "You're Boring" song by Jack Black and Will Ferrell. - all the great "everyone in New Zealand has been thanked" zingers. - the opening montage of Crystal-inserts. Particularly when they put him naked in front of both Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson. - wondering how many birds have nested in Fran Walsh's hair, and the full realization that Peter Jackson probably rented his tux for $20, but looked great anyways. - the Quebec director of The Barbarian Invasions thanking Peter Jackson for not being nominated in the documentary categories. - watching Liv Tyler put on and take off those ridiculous glasses over and over again. - seeing Annie Lennox sing... that woman has a lot of teeth.
But the capper was watching Adrian Brody ham it up with the breath spray. Honestly. I was dying with laughter. I hope he wins something again some day, just so we can see what he does.

This was my first end-to-end Oscar night as well. Yay! I have no life.
Anyway...what did Adrian Brody do previously? He made a remark about being under a restraining order, or something.

Last year, when Halle Berry announced that he had won Best Actor, he bent her over and gave her a huge kiss.
Hence the breath spray this year. Though that would've backfired had Castle-Hughes won.

[shakes fist feelbly]damn you married couple![/shaking fist] Lissa's lucky that I didn't change my lead actor pick to Sean Penn, who I really thought would win (yup, sure, trust me ;D ). I would have been sent to the guest bedroom until I had my attitude adjustment Seriously, I thought Bill Murray did an awesome job, but that Sean Penn probably got the award for both 21 grams and Mystic River.
