Ah yes. Riverdance of a hundred Shatners. I avoided sleeping for weeks after I saw that. *shudder*

If memory serves, Shatner doesn't actually do much in that commercial. He's just there for the "what...thehell?" effect.

Well, to be fair, that's what Shatner's best at these days. Just appear at random, and leave your audience to wonder what on earth is going on. It's like Jerry Stiller and Snoop Dogg showing up in the new AOL 9.0 ad. (which I have to admit I found hysterical)

My turn, my turn: That Swiffer commercial with the Devo rip off that has the traditional smartly dressed housemom dancing around the house with her Swiffer like an addled monkey to "When a problem comes along you must Swiffer! Swiffer good!" That's tremendously annoying to me for a number of reasons, but the really weird and uncool part of the ad is the end where two prepubescent girls who I have to assume are supposed to be this woman's daughters are sitting on a bed watching housemom flip out about mopping the damn floor and they roll their eyes and say something about how they hope it's not genetic or something. But the prepubescent girls are all gothed up with black and white make up and torn black tank tops and lots of jewelry and everything. I was just like "why is that necessary?" ANYONE in their right mind would watch this woman Swiffering to Devo and roll their eyes. Who are these two ass smack kids all glammed up in their suburban house with their speed freak mom? Why would anyone want to invite me to peak inside this nightmare of a family and aspire to purchase anything they might offer me?
OH! And that Subway commercial where the guy asks the other guy if he was raised by wolves and they cut to the guy suckling at a wolf teat with a bunch of baby wolves? Seriously made me sick to my stomach. Like I know advertisers are soulless, disgusting, evil monsters, but on what planet is implied animal nipple sucking by a human EVER a good marketing strategy?

Oh man, I just died laughing at that Subway commercial. Wrong, perhaps, but oh so right for my mood.

Anyone notice the trend of Raised-By-Wolves commercials lately? There's the aforementioned Quiznos commercial (with the funny looking guy on the wolf-boob), and there's that suv commercial that is moderately funny narrated by the mom who talks about her husband being raised by wolves. The good part about that one, is when the son runs up to the dad, who's standing by a lake fishing or something. The son says "Dad, fetch!" and throws a stick out into the lake. The dad immediately runs out into the water after it.
However, there's also the part where the mom is brushing the dad's back hair - and that's kinda wrong.

Just in general, I hate promos that are misleading. All ads for "Conquest" imply a totally different structure to the show than what you get, and that "Extreme Martial Arts" special on Discovery Channel made it sound like they'd be analyzing the mechanics of the human body.
I liked both those shows BTW, but seriously were the promo guys just in the dark or did they do it on purpose?

Dude that Xtreme Martial Arts thing was TOTALLY misleading. I watched the whole thing, but I was pretty disappointed by not getting what they lead me to believe I would get to learn about. Boooo!

I was glad for one thing on that XMA show, and that was that they presented the short stick as a serious weapon. It's what I studied when I took Arnis and no one gives it the respect it deserves.
Anyway, some terrible commercials I've seen lately you all can probably thank your lucky stars you don't have to see (they're local ads). There is a whole series for the college bookstore (the one not actually part of the college). One was a ripoff of Miss Cleo, starring a young woman who can't maintain a Carribean accent to save her life, who apparently got the job for being a black female who can say "Call me now!" Another featues a slob guy wearing a "Spayed and Neutered" tee shirt being zapped into a Price is Right ripoff where they ADVERTISE that three tee shirts and a sweatshirt cost nearly two hundred dollars at this store. And a third is "Queer Eye for a Book Buy," where a broke straight guy looking like Howard Stern has so many books they're stacked in the freezer, so he gets a bunch of gay guys to give him a haircut and help him carry his books to the buy-back. Ending with a wad of cash in his hand, a cute girl giving him a peck on the cheek, and five gay guys standing behind him checking out his ass. I've seen high school plays with better acting than these ads.
Another one that creeps me out is for a Nissan dealership. It has an overly animated, disproportionate, cheap-CGI football coach telling you to get a car there. Not really a bad commercial in itself, but I find it seriously painful to watch.
I don't remember what it's advertising, but there is another one that's all CGI...they took the time to animate Santa's reindeer (four of them), the sled, the bag of toys, and Santa's clothing, but Santa Himself was a glowing red streak. He looked like a bent lightsaber.

Got a couple of 'em today.
Firstly, the central theme of Dell's current advertising campaing seems to be, "You're ignorant, but that's okay." I vote they should have one commercial where all of their tech support associates dress up like giant rolls of toilet paper.
Secondful, T-Mobile's anime commercials bug me for reasons I feel I can't adequately put into words. Or perhaps I'm just lazy.

Credit where credit is due: MSN has a couple good ones. I especially like the one where the butterfly guy is sitting on the couch while a big cat claws at him, and he's telling the old lady that he could order her a scratching post and have it there in two days. "Mr. Schnookums likes you." "Mr. Schnookums has sharp claws."
Also the one where the butterfly comes in to this guy's bedroom and asks if it's ok if his son looks up bikinis. "What?!" "The Bikini Islands...history class..." "Oh ok."

We were talking about one just yesterday. Its for some big department store, Target or Foley's or something. Anyway, its for a couple of singing, electronic snowmen. I've gotta laugh. This woman sees these animatronic snowmen, looks quizzically upwards, and then we cut to her dinner party. Its the ultimate holiday disaster! All the guests, gathered in the living room, sharing a moment of awkward suburban white-collar silence. WHAT IS A HOSTESS TO DO? I'll tell you what: Activate your Singin' Freakin' Snowmen, baby. With a quick and quiet lunge, the button is pressed, and the cheap electric caroling begins. Laughter ensues all around, crisis is averted. FOR NOW... (well, it doesn't end so ominously. But seriously, how long is that going to last? Should I buy a different 30 dollar piece of plastic garbage for every 3 minutes of life I want to sustain at my party?) To me, the completey absurd setting just highlights the facts: This is a piece of plastic garabage that you do not need, that serves no real purpose. I wonder how many of those snowmen get bought...

Sadly, that's an apt description of nearly every gift giving holiday at my family gatherings. My mom, in particular, COLLECTS piece of crap snowmen novelty items. I have a feeling we're gonna get that thing Xmas eve.
