once upon a time, i was blown away by the simple concept of having an entire season, sometimes an entire series(!), of a favorite television on dvd where i could watch any episode at any time. it BLEW MY MIND.
today, i'm all jaded and i'm like "yeah, yeah, that's great. i want them in widescreen, ana-banana-po-morphic, with 5.0 90210 and a half double-decaffeinated half-calf."
two recents dvd-related things have really gotten my "goat."
1. like the faithful fan i am, i bought the first season of "the oc" the day it was released. i loved my box set. then, a few weeks ago, i go into the wherehouse and notice a used copy of season 1. IN A SMALLER, TIGHTER BOX. they totally shrunk down the HUGE initial packaging into something a whole lot better. and that's how season 2 (which again i bought on the first day, like a nervous tic) is: smaller, tighter, cleaner lines, sharper curves. DANGIT. do i trade in my old and busted season set for the new hotness of a smaller incarnation? why couldn't they just make it small and nice from the get-go? DOH.
2. double-sided things are STUPID. my "mannequin" dvd is double-sided, though it's not that bad since i'll never watch the other side (the fullscreen version of the film) so i don't care if i smudge or vomit on it. but the upcoming "house" season 1 set is double-sided, with three episodes on each side. STUPID!!! i was going to give it to my mom, who is careful but she still might scratch them up. if anyone of you are involved in OR grow up to be involved in the dvd industry, please please please do away with double-sided anything. it's just bad. bad for everyone.

i dont know, the double sided thing helps me avoid the mistakes like buying the widescreen version of american pie and full screen version of ap2.

that full/wide thing makes me so mad when I get home and realize I got the full, ALGJAPSOGJAPSOJGAOSJGAPSOJGAPOSHG.

I love the 2-sided DVDs with the wide on 1 side and full on the other. I don't have American Pie 2 on DVD, but when I do get it, I have to have it Fullscreen, there's just No Other Way. Because I'm used to seeing it on TV and I'm 99% positive that the bars will cut off some of the pure hottness of Jason Biggs in those ultra-tight Band Camp shorts. I'm simply not willing to take a chance on it. Fullscreen HO!

I know exactly what you mean by this but I have the opposite problem.
I’m a big fan of the Stargate:SG1 series so of course I’ve been buying the seasons as they came out. The first 8 seasons came out in large packaging that looked great. A very nice sleeve that holds five movie-sized DVD cases that create a cool image featuring the cast when inserted into the sleeve. But when season 9 came out this fall it only came out in the new “slim case” completely throwing off my perfect wall display! Seriously, with season 10 having been announced as the final season of the series could they not have created the final two sets in the original larger packaging in addition to the new slimmer model?

I personally like the double-sided discs. it's a pain to have to squint to read the tiny writing around the centre, but it cuts down on the size, and hopefully (theoretically) the price. Is this true? I don't buy enough TV on DVD to know.

But when season 9 came out this fall it only came out in the new “slim case” completely throwing off my perfect wall display! But then you run into a different problem. Back when they started to release the Star Trek movies in 2-Disc special editions ('01 or '02 I think), they were in the old-style two-disc DVD cases, where each is about as big as two single dvd cases put together. But by the time they got around to Generations or First Contact (movies 7 and 8, respectively), most 2-disc editions were now being released in much smaller, more convenient packaging. Presumably in the interest of asthetic continuity, Paramount continued to release their ST Special Editions in the bulky old cases and critics and fans were in simultaneous uproar about Paramount not being with the times and how hard these cases are shelve with the other, thinner ones they had. I appreciated the gesture, but they were really crucified in nearly every review I read. Al EDIT: And, in regards to releasing two different style packages a`la The Simpsons, I'm not sure Stargate has the necessary following to convince the studio it would be worth it.

I have to say, my biggest complaint about TV on DVD sets is simply the price. I understand they're basically selling 6 discs and everything, but I do not have $54 to spend on South Park Seson 2. The only DVD sets I have are: -Dead Like Me Season 1 (got it for 25% off!) -The Office Season 1 (only one disc, ergo only $15) -South Park Season 1 (for my birthday!) -The Simpsons Season 3 (again a present)
Of course I probably cold buy more if I stopped buying things like Special Edition James Dean Box Set! or Platinum Edition: Romance Films of the 1930s! But what can I say? I'm a TCM-type of gal!

Oh... the sweet siren song of the TV DVD box set. How often have I been seducted into buying TV shows that I've never seen? Anyway, double-sided DVDs are a sign of the devil. No point, especially if you've got a DVD changer.
One other thing that bothers me is when Amazon.com has great sales on TV box sets, and then amazon.ca does not.

Ooh, when I find the person who came up with "double sided discs" they will rue the day that they ever dreamt up that horrible creation. It's just confusing and unnecessary. Oh the times that I had put a DVD in the player, believing it to be in the widescreen side...when actuality it was on the dreaded fullscreen! Curses unto you Double-Sided-Disc-Man...wherever you are.
Also I don't like just looking at a blank disc. I like my dvds to have pictures on them dangit. If I'm going to pay $1.54x10(110) for a DVD is it too much to ask that it look pretty?

No point, especially if you've got a DVD changer. I have never heard of such a thing. I presume it's like a CD changer, where you put in a handful of discs? So I could watch a season of TV without even having to get up to change the discs? Oh, what a frightful invention.

Joining in with the "double-sided discs are evil" concept, i've got a copy of Goodfellas on DVD where you have to turn the disc over halfway through the movie to watch the end. Must have been one of the first DVD's released and they hadn't worked out the compression stuff yet.
Trust me it's extremely annoying and almost ruins the whole movie watching experience.

Funny story: Having never seen Goodfellas but hearing a lot of good things I decided buy it when I saw it on sale for $5 at Best Buy. I get it home and notice it's double sided. Figuring that it was a full/widescreen deal I put in the disk and started watching. About halfway through the disk I was a bit confused on the plot but still continued to watch. Then the film ended and while I enjoyed what I watched I was still confused on how and why a lot of things happened. Turned out I started watching the movie on it's second half

DarthShady, I am also a TCM (as in the Turner Classic variety) type of girl. One of these days, I'm going to be able to afford to buy those huge Warners musical and star-related sets and replace all the movies I taped in college!
Sigh. For now, I'll stick to looking for bargains on and offline. I do have a birthday coming in April, though...

HAHAHA Lordmoon, i lol-ed at that one.
My biggest complaint is the horrible beavis and butthead dvds they realized with "director's cut" episodes. They actually had key hilarious scenes cut out of them. How stupid!
