this weekend, i'm going to be close enough to hit two of the greatest used dvds places possibly IN THE WORLD.
i'm not going to tell you where they are, though. they're mine! i'm sure you understand.
one is fairly obvious, if you like music and you've ever read 'calvin & hobbes.' the other is less well-known, located in a small college town where it has been theorized that rich people/students buy pretty much every new dvd release on tuesday, burn copies on their super-duper computers, and then trade in their once-viewed stuff for new stuff the following week. repeat repeat repeat.
anyway, i have some cash and i'm willing to buy some stuff, but i know nothing about tv season/series sets. i'm thinking about 'profit' ($9) and maaaaaybe 't.j. hooker' ($21) for schlock value, but beyond that i'm not sure what is worth picking up. i have both seasons of the 'the o.c.,' 'house,' '24,' and 'arrested development.'
i guess i'm asking: if there are any tv show dvd sets that just blow your socks off, please let me know and maybe give a short reason or two (please!) why they might blow off my socks, too? if possible by the end of this week: friday is the start of crazy west coast time.
and don't say 'the prisoner' only because the complete series was the first dvd purchase i ever made along with my first player. buy it, fool!

"Strangers with Candy" is always solid. You've probably even seen an ep or two before. "Wonderfalls" is less known but frequently hilarious.

Off the top of my head, I'll mention Freaks and Geeks and Six Feet Under. There are also many like Ren & Stimpy and The Adventures of Pete & Pete that aren't necessarily great DVD sets, but excellent shows on their own anyway. The Muppet Show is on DVD now, too. Rejoice and be glad.

While good, you want to stay away from the Ren & Stimpy DVDs, Kyle, even if you love the show... the ones currently out are the edited-for-syndication versions, while it's rumored that the original, uncut episodes will be in a new set next year.
I dunno, it depends on what you're looking for. If you like a lot of bonus features, you can't beat the Simpsons sets. I've never watched the show, but everyone raves about Lost, and that DVD just dropped on Tuesday. My feelings on Scrubs are well-documented elsewhere on the site, so I don't need to explain that: if you like it, you're cool, if not, well...
Like M&D, I liked Wonderfalls a lot, but it's definitely a show that won't appeal to everyone... depends on your tolerance for hearing other members of Gen Next whining and making snarky comments a lot in the midst of weird stuff happening. That's my bag, baby, but your mileage may vary.

We're suckers for The West Wing. I'm NOT into politics at all and thought I would hate it, but I really didn't. Excellent writing, brilliant characters, and I even sort of started understanding politics a little better because of it. Aaron Sorkin kicks serious butt. (along those lines, I really enjoyed Sports Night too.)

We just finished up Sports Night this week, by the way. Next up (I hope)... Scrubs, Season I. I've got my notify at Amazon set to tell us when West Wing pre-order begins; my guess is that it'll be released in November, if past history is any prediction.
I've enjoyed West Wing and Sports Night. Another one I really enjoyed was Band of Brothers. Heck, Sopranos was awesome, too (although I don't own them, just borrow them from a friend when I want to see them).

I'm in agony with all of the TV DVD sets out there and my limited spending money these days. Really want Simpsons Season Six, but also wouldn't mind watching the first season of Lost (I never watched it when it was on TV, but I've heard enough to know I'd probably love it). Also, Arrested Development season 2 is coming...!

I think my favourite tv show on DVD would be Futurama. I wasn't a huge fan of the show when it was initially on television, but I grew to love it on DVD. As an added bonus, there are commentaries on every single episode, which are almost more fun than the episodes themselves. I highly recommend Futurama all the way.

is the first season of the new battlestar galactica worth buying?
because i found it used for $20 in pristine condition and bought it, but if it's lame i'll take it back in an instant. an instant!

One of the best written shows on tv. Check it out, and if you don't like it, auction it. Best Buy has it for $50, put it on ebay for $35 it'll sell. By all means, though, watch it first.

I bought Night Court Season 1 a while ago, although it didn't have much in the way of special features. Unfortunately, that's the only set WB is making. After that they're only doing "Best Of" sets and the first is "The Best of Markie Post".

Currently working through season 2 of Scrubs (awesome, although I had flashbacks when Lissa's surgeon came into the birthing room earlier today!)... can't wait until season 3 comes out.
In the meantime, we're waiting for West Wing season 5 to come out. And, I've added the first seasons of Arrested Development and Lost to my Christmas lists...

Birthing room? Does that mean there'll be an extra person by the time you read this?
