I finally beat Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones last week and started up Breath of Fire II, which I downloaded off of the VC ages ago but never got around to playing. I loved it back in the day on the SNES, but couldn't get all the way to the end. Now that I'm thinking about it, this may actually be the first non-FF JRPG I've played since Chrono Cross came out back in 2000. Grind, baby, grind! POP: Two thrones frustrated me like crazy! I had a major game-ending bug that prevented me from finishing that game. After beating both the garden tower and the clock tower I went back to garden tower to collect something i'd missed.. when I came out of the tower the game thought that I was supposed to be in a boss battle that I'd already beaten, except that there was no way to get to that boss now... *sigh* I was interested in knowing how the story turned out but I really didn't want to start all over... so i abandoned it

Just bought a new Nintendo DS game today. The new Prince of Persia (fallen king or some such non-sense).
Yeah..... There is something that I think the developers of this game (Well, ALL of them actually) need to understand. First of all... The DS has these things called buttons. Remember those? Little cross-shaped thingy and 6 buttons (y,x,b,a,l,and r)? Ring a bell developers? Yeah, just because the DS has touch-screen capability does NOT mean the whole frickin game HAS to be controlled by it. Do you have any idea how many times I have had to watch that little doofus smack into the pavement because my "slide the stylus and tap to jump" command did not work? A LOT game developers a LOT. How about this... directional cross moves the little guy around. "B" button jumps, "Y" button swings the sword, "R" for sprint, "L" for block. Am I an innovator? am I a genius? THEN you use the stylus or even your finger tip to manipulate the game world as needed. Amazing right?
Oh... one more thing. I don't know if you brain-trusts have gotten the memo... it IS in fact the 21st century. There is NO reason that this game should have so much slow-down in the frame rate. Screen-filling boss, sure it happens. One badly animated main character and a spinning blade and the whole game goes to molasses. Utter garbage. Sleep well tonight on MY 22 bucks you bunch of toilet bowls.

I picked up Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia the other day for the DS, and I'm instantly reminded of several things.
1) Castlevania games are hard. 2) Castlevania games are fun. 3) Somewhere along the line, someone at Konami got a serious woody for Super Metroid.
The game is fun, and very reminiscent of my days playing its forebears, but when did Konami decide that every one of its games should now bear the "Metroid-vania" seal of approval? Also, I miss Simon Belmont. It's just not the same slaying skeletons in a backless dress.
Oh, and no touch screen, Gallahad. You'll like that.

playing Super Mario Galaxy... found a brand new copy for 15 bucks!
its AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME... possibly the best game I've ever played. I often attracted to games that have good storylines, which SMG doesn't have, but for sheer fun value it can't be beat. The gravity mechanic is brilliant, and each galaxy is full of amazing ideas that are also well implemented and make you wonder how they thought of it..... love it!
I've semi-abandoned Bioshock halfway through, but will probably go back to it once I beat SMG

I LOATHE Seymour Flux. Yeah, game. I get it. He's tough. And the Guado are mad. But couldn't you have least made it so that if I'm going to have to grind for days on end to be a high enough level to beat Seymour then I could at least go farther back than that friggin Thunder Plains to do it?! I'm' going to strangle someone with garland if I have to go through Mt. Gagazet one more time!

Spider-man: Web of Shadows I've played a fair few Spider-man games over the years (inc. Spider-man on the Atari 2600 and the Amazing Spider-man on Genesis) and about the best one was Spider-man 2, the computer game. Ultimate Spider-man took the same GTA/free roaming format, put Marvel artwork on it and somewhat refined the control engine. Unfortunately, USM felldown on the actual gameplay as it each chapter became a repetitive slew of chasing the new villain, cornering him/her and then learning how to beat the boss. With limited save points and a harsh learning curve, I finally had enough of the game and never completed, despite getting quite a way in to it. I looked at Spider-man 3 but was underwhelmed with the film, so passed. Spider-man: Friend or Foe looked fun, in a "Marvel Ultimate Alliance" kinda way, but the bad reviews really turned me away (despite being tempted to pick it up for next to nothing!). I was lucky enough to get Web of Shadows as a Christmas present and, finally having some time NOT devoted to family occasions, I have spent the last 4 hours playing it solidly. Suffice to say, WoS is like the 3rd game of its kind and it shows: this is polished from the get go, with great story-driven action, lots of side quests and plenty of Spidey action. I'm really impressed with what they've done and although the controls took some getting used to, they've actually done a good job with it. There are only a couple of niggling things which bother me. First off, the switch to transform Spidey from his traditional red/blue costume to his black/white symbiote costume is the same control as your movement button... hence I find myself changing costumes in mid-battle. It doesn't really affect gameplay that much but it does bother me. Secondly, to get Spidey to do his trademark leaping around you've got to use some unintuitive controls. Maybe its just me, but I find using the 360 pad's shoulder buttons to be a little too much of a stretch to use. They are fine for triggering stuff that you rarely or want to consciously decide to use (like smart bombs etc), but for something so basic as Spidey's agility? I'm not convinced. LOL I just realised that I've written loads about this game when really I just wanted to say: Game, good, buy now. Anyway, Spidey fans, its ace Check it out

Castlevania Judgment. And allow me to offer that all of the criticism you've heard about it is true. I'm going to keep playing because it's part of my quest to beat every Castlevania game, but this is one that tests your resolve. Playing with the wiimote and nunchuk is crazy because regular attacks involve shaking the wiimote, so your arm will be sore after just a few rounds. The Gamecube controller is better, but it still comes down to blocking almost constantly, then just mashing the attack button when your opponent lets up. Super moves are totally unbalanced- complete gamekillers in early rounds where you can take 2/3rds of your opponent's health with one tap of a button, then absolutely useless in the last two rounds when your opponent blocks at all times. Subweapons are fun, but the first time you accidentally pick up a random box and switch from triple shot cross to stopwatch, you'll cry. (That part, at least, is in keeping with Castlevania tradition.) The character designs are a mixed bag- some work (Trevor, Simon), others are completely out of left field (Eric Lecarde as a 12-year-old boy? Grant the pirate as... whatever the hell that is?). Story mode is random, with some interesting motivations (Simon wanting to best his ancestor Trevor to prove himself worthy), but others that are completely bizarre, like Maria's obsession with the breast size of every other female character. (And no, I'm not making that up... she describes Sypha's chest as a "divine gift" and laments that even the vampire chick's knockers are bigger than hers. Yeah.) And those camera angles will be the death of me.
Frustrating, frustrating, frustrating. Lots of potential, not well realized.
