That one time Mario came through the screen and offered me some of his mushrooms, oh wait... that was just a dream. In that case.. uhh... in Halo when you see Col. Keyes thoroughly dead, that was quite freaky.

I think the opening in the demo for American McGee's Alice is one of the most disturbing things I've seen in a video game. There's a slow pan down a hallway in the asylum with this creepy lullabye music playing (you also see a bust of the Mad Hatter to the right) and it eventually focuses into one of teh rooms, where Alice is sitting on the floor with her knees clutched to her chest, rocking back and forth. There are a lot of small moments in 7th guest. The painting with the hands trying to push it's way out, the ghosts that keep appearing and beckoning you down the hall, the woman screaming "come back!" everytime you exit the game . . . you know, this game would probably be really cheesy to me now since I haven't played it in years, but I only used to be able to play it in broad daylight with my dad in the room with me!

Well, I've played Silent Hill with two friends... and boy did we laugh!!! First of all I'm happy I was with those two friends cause if I would have been alone I wouldn't have finished it. I was so bad with the commands and so nervous because of all the freaky things that happens, that I always ended dead after 2 seconds... Now why did we laugh? There's so many sexual reference that it's impossible not to... -When the character has the crowbar in his hands and he is prepared to fight... let's just say he has the same position that Dark Helmet and Lone Star have in "Spaceballs" when they activate their rings to fight... ;D -The freaky kids when they attack seems to be doing every pedophile's dream. -And the nurses when they die, you see their underwear (and if I remember correctly they don't quite scream like someone that's in excruciating pain...) All the time of the game we were looking at each other saying "Do we really see what we're seeing?" "What the...?" So for me Silent Hill is the funniest game I ever played. But I'd be scared senseless if I had to play any of the sequel by myself (except if you tell me I'll be playing with the same two friends) In fact I may ask them if they're interested to play the 2nd game ;D

Definitely the wolf tunnel in the first Metal Gear Solid. I crawled through one of the little holes, and when I'm halfway through it one of the wolves starts growling and pressing through. It was so unexpected I gave a yell and shot the thing hundreds of times before I braved the hole again.

Aliens vs. Predator, playing as a marine, scary as hell. Playing as an alien is just fun ;D

(Apologies for reviving an old thread.)
Possible spoilers:
Silent Hill, of course...I remember when I was a wee mishap, during a birthday sleepover, when I popped Silent Hill for the first time. Me and my friend got to the knife babies, me and my friend ran out of the room.
Drakan: The Ancient's Gate. Near the end of the game, you have to fight this flesh mage. No big deal, in this fantasy game, right? Well, when I saw the flesh mage for the first time, it was like something out of a real bad nightmare. I had to pause and run around in a well lit area before I tried again.

There were lots of genuinely spooky moments in Eternal Darkness, the kind that were subtle, like Caesar's bust turning to watch you as you walked down a hallway, or the appearance of your character in a bathtub full of blood... lots of that game was cheese, but there were some dandy moments. On this theme, by the way, I saw the trailer for Stay Alive last night. Good God, that's just looking like some kind of awful. A bunch of twentysomething who play videogames find that when their character dies, THEY DIE!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRGGHHHH!!!

This may seem lame, but I don't generally play horror games. I have the Magus Dimension house mod for Morrowind, and there are two slightly freaky things about the naked staring "mannequins" that come with the house. One, when you open them to add armor, one of the options is "dispose of corpse" (and they look just like corpses from the game). Two, more than once they've actually turned their heads to follow my character, the way LIVE characters do in the game. I thought I was imagining this until Sib 1 came in and said, "Hey, that one just turned its head and looked at you." Creepy.

Two games I've played recently both had some cheap but effective scares.
Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines has an overall horror-gothic theme, and some fairly macabre quests. One you face off against a prosthetic maker who, as you descend further and further into his basement, do you learn is truly insane and dismembering captured victims (he even cut off his own hand). Another quest has you investigating a haunted hotel where a poltergeist is going nuts. That entire level has absolutely no enemies (although you don't realize that until you're done), but the sound and visual surprises put you on edge and make you want to get the heck out of there. The voice in my headset whispering "He's coming!" did nothing good for my sanity.
Indigo Prophecy also promises a great story and creepy moments. The tried-and-true horror staple of your character getting something from the medicine cabinet, closing the mirror to reveal a dead person standing behind you still made me jump, and hard. This game has a great hook -- you begin the story as a character who just killed a stranger in a bathroom while not in control of your body. What do you do, where do you go? And then... then you jump into the bodies of the cops investigating the scene, which is a great movie-like perspective.

Anyone here played System Shock 2? Talk about freaky moments, I think the entire damn game is one long freaky moment, from when you get out of the cryo-tube and the room explodes, then you start seeing ghosts, then the mutants start coming after you. I'm still in the early parts of it (I think), but it's a hell of an experience.

I did try that. Got as far as a room (some medical room I think) where I turned the corner and there was a guy hanging by his neck from a pipe, twisting around. Then I turned and one of the mutant freaks attacked me, and I couldn't hit <esc> fast enough.

Yes! System Shock 2 was outstanding, especially in the early levels where ammo is scarce and you hadn't figured out where the enemies are yet. I spent hours of my freshman year of college glued to this game, headphones in place, bowl of Tostitos in easy reach, shoulders hunched in anticipation, until my roommate Brendan (he managed to do it every damn time) would sneak up behind me and scream while grabbing my shoulders, effectively melting me into into a gibbering puddle of nervy goo. ...jerk.
And Game Informer just dida cover story on a new game coming out from the same developers called Bioshock. Looks pretty groovy.

Well, System Shock 2 sure has been owning all my free time lately. Let me tell y'all, when they tell you this is one of the most underrated games of all time, they're not joking. I've gotten a lot further, and the game has switched from run-and-hide-and-freak-out-because-ammo-is-scarce to more psychologically disturbing. After the third level, my character had plenty of cash, guns, ammo, and leveling up really turned me into a tank. But when you start going into the crew quarters, finding people who were either attacked in their beds or committed suicide (one guy apparently drinked himself to death, from the lack of blood and abundance of vodka bottles around him) or reading email logs about the failed resistance movement against the aliens, the atmosphere gets really creepy.
Two outstanding things, though: The SURPRISING TWIST!TM about halfway through the game and a bit after that, crew email logs start referencing a kickass soldier fighting the aliens on the lower decks. Then the leading scientist starts contacting you directly. That was cool.
Oh, and they're finally getting BioShock together? Wow, I'll have to read up on that.

Indigo Prophecy is shaping up to be a very memorable adventure game/story for me... I really do recommend it. It does great horror in that 90% of the game is pretty non-scary... and that way you're just dreading when they're going to pull the next creepy scare.
An example:
After a chapter where your main character woos and beds his ex-girlfriend, he awakes in bed in a start. You get up and it's completely silent, in the middle of the night in your apartment. The first thing you notice is that ALL of your windows are open -- even though you as a player closed them previously at your girlfriend's request. You go into the living room and there's a crow sitting on a chair, staring at you. You close the windows, close a balcony door, and notice your front door is ajar...
Then you have a choice (not explicitly implied, but it is there) that you can either go out of the door or back to bed. If you do choose the alluring, horribly tempting front door, prepare to be completely freaked out at what's in the hallway *brr*
It turns out this segment was just a dream, but it had a perfect nightmare quality to it that it seemed like a real bad dream you or I might have.

Silent hill 4: the room , Is pretty Darn freaky. In my opinion its the best in the series. You can only play in 3rd person mode though which makes it less freaky.
