If you've been living under a rock, the lastest HP news flash has been that J.K. Rowling has released the title of book 6. She's also said that the half-blood prince is NOT Harry or Voldemort, but it was almost the title for book 2. Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions on who the half-blood prince is? I've heard a few suggestions: Tom Riddle: The obvious choice. He IS a half-blood, and he is a descendent of Slytherin (I think). It just depends: is Tom Riddle Voldemort, or does J.K. consider them two seperate things? Possible, as she doesn't appear to consider Voldie human, and Tom was most definitely flesh and blood. Hagrid: Hagrid's a half-blood. His father didn't seem overly royal, but his mother very well could have been. (And let's not even think about some of the other implications there, shall we?) But we know the giants are going to play into the story, and Hagrid is obviously a major player in all of this. Snape: Again, we know nothing about Snape aside from him being a kind of nasty potions prof. McGonagall seems to like him, implying he's only nasty when Harry's around. Although he made nasty comments about Lilly being a Muggle, he could be hiding his own half-bloodedness. (I still think he was in love with her.) Any other Potter geeks dying for some pointless speculation?

Two weak suggestions (I think your choice of Hagrid is the best):
Draco: Unlikely, since his mother is related to Sirius, we'd probably know by now if she were any sort of royalty. She's also evil, but that's not a disqualification. Although if Draco knew anything about being royal, he would have lorded it over Harry long ago.
Neville: He's a Harry could-have-been, and we don't know that much about his parents' background, just their fate. Based on the last book, Neville's going to be an important character in the next one. But this doesn't make any sense relating to book 2, since he's barely in it.

Pffffft... duh, it's perfectly obvious who it's going to be. Why else would Rowling have brought him back for book 5? It's a classic blind, folks- make everyone think the poor little orphen kid is your hero for 5 books, and then, BAM! reveal the true hero of the story (as we all knew him to be from his first appearance in Chamber)... the one, the only, the magnificent Gilderoy Lockhart!
Or, y'know. Something like that.

You know .. after bringing Lockhart back in book 5 ... it's not really that far fetched! Most of his magic always has been weak ...

Some gossip that I've seen, which is remarkable in that it shows the RIDICULOUS amount of thought people put into these things:
Apparently in Book 5 Harry mentions that Dudley was beating up this kid Mark Evans who is about 10. Evans was Lily Potter's maiden name. The gossip runs that this chap is likely to be relevant, as being 10 he would just be about to come into his powers.
Probably tosh, but who knows?

Hey, you might be onto something there, Vee; Rowling does seem to be big on tossing out names that seem unimportant but rise to prominence later. After all, Sirius Black was mentioned in the first chapter of the first book, but it was so insignificant that most of us didn't reven remember it by the time Azkaban popped up. (Of course, I didn't even start reading until Goblet was released, so...) -D

Actually, if you go to www.jkrowling.com and look in the FAQ section, she's letting her readers vote on the next question she'll answer. One of them is something along the lines of is Mark Evans significant? The only thing is if Mark Evans IS related to Lily, doesn't that mean Harry would have more living relatives out there? Also found out that Molly Weasley's maiden name is, oh shoot. But in the first chapter, Dumbledore mentions a lot of her family's been killed off by Voldie. Prewett or something like that- it began with a P.

Speaking of Harry Potter, check out this new book for sale at Amazon: Harrius Potter et Philosophi Lapis. I didn't realize that those poor latin-speaking children were missing out on the craze ;D But, the most amazing part... it's on Amazon's bestseller list. Well, it's #69, but it's there. And the ancient greek version... #1.

Just reread this thread...
Mark Evans is NOT related to Lily. JKR goofed up and when casting around for a generic name, came up with Evans. Ooops.
But you're right about the level of gossip, Vee. I thought I was bad, but I've found people that make the mithryl debate look like a casual fling.

Which means around May 16th, we'll have to have Lissa fitted with a strait jacket to keep her from bouncing off the walls at MRFH HQ. I'd really hate for her to destroy Kyle's novelty mug collection. Again. We're almost out of duct tape.

Let's see... July 16th, book arrives. Lissa snags it from the mailbox and disappears for the next three days. Can't make it to work <cough cough>, until she reads the entire tome. I finally see her on the 19th, where she passes off the book to me, and tells me to hurry up and read it, so that we can discuss. July 20th... she'll be bugging me to let her read it again... She's not obsessed, nahhhh ;D

Grrrr, it's all such crap. I'm going AWAY for six weeks this summer, so I may very well send my sister as my emissary for the book and get it at midnight. Muahahaaaaaaa. She's terrified that she'll be trampled by the horde of people. Especially when they find out she doesn't really want to read it. (GASP! She hasn't even read the fifth one! A travesty!)
Anyway...

Well, I'm glad SOMEONE else shares my interest! And duckie, if you think it will take me that long you obviously don't know me that well Although you're probably right about the 20th. Pooly, has Poolgirl burst your eardrums yet? (And tell her we need much more Lupin in this one. Not that she can change it, but I suspect she might agree.)

Not at eardrum bursting levels yet, Lissa, but she's rereading book 5 as we speak to get herself warmed up.
Which I may do myself, actually.
