This was inpired by kyle's meet and greet thread up in the General area. Tell us about your favorite Christmas tunage! And I swear I didn't start this just so I can get some downloading ideas for Kazaa!
Myself, I love:
Billy Squier's "Christmas is a time to say I love you" A guitar instrumental of "Deck the Halls" (by Ted Nugent, I think) John Lennon's "Merry Xmas (War is Over)" There's also a Very Special Christmas album called "Very Special Christmas Live" - it has lots of Eric Clapton playing guitar on it. And the Trans-Siberian orchestra is good stuff.
And there's a version of "Winter Wonderland" I keep hearing in Hot Topic, but I can't figure out the band I fear asking the people who work there because they are so much cooler than me. Any ideas?

The song itself doesn't specify Christmas, but it was used in The Polar Express, so it's a Christmas song to me. Rockin' On Top Of The World by Steven Tyler. He's over 50 years old, but he can still sing like a really cool monkey.

For the more serious songs, I really like Band Aid's Do They Know it's Christmas, as well as the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's Christmas in Sarajevo. But, for the humorous ones... Weird Al's Christmas at Ground Zero ranks up there...

I'm currently a fan of "Merry Christmas from the Family." Country song. Hysterical. Hear it. It's great.
As for serious, the shoes song made me cry the first time I heard it.

When I was a kid, Manheim Steamroller was really popular, so I have their first 2 CDs (each Christmas album got progressively worse). I also have a really cool album I discovered at the library: The Carol Album: Seven Centuries of Christmas Music. It's got some really cool carols in old/middle English (where they pronounce words like "knights" similar to the French in Monty Python and the Holy Grail). Some other highlighs: Stille Nacht sung in the original German; This endere nyghth, an absolutely beautiful arrangement of a dialogue between the Christ child and the Virgin Mary; a version of God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen to a completely different tune than what we're used to; Riu, riu, chiu, a Christmas carol in which the chorus is a traditional shepherd's cry; and The Old Year now away is fled, a New Year's song sung to the same tune as "What Child is This"/"Greensleeves". My stepmother, who is involved in a yearly dinner theater/Christmas performance, bought Judy Collins Christmas albums a few years ago because she was doing one of the songs. Her version of "I'll be Home for Christmas" is done a capella and sounds so pure and exact. I also like her versions of "Good King Wenceslas" (despite the cheesy synth) and "The Cherry Tree Carol." I had never heard that last one before, and if I don't watch out, it makes me a bit weepy. I also like Eartha Kitt's version of "Santa Baby". Stay away from the Madonna one--she's got nothin on Catwoman! Oh, and how could I forget the McKenzie brother's version of "The 12 Days of Christmas". "And a bee-eer in a tree!"

I'm not really into seasonal music, especially pop songs, but:
The Darkness- Christmas Time (Don't let the bells end) is fun and kitchy.
And also: Wham- Last Christmas

Christmas Eve Sarajevo, Christmas Wrapping, and that rock cover of You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch that was going around a few years ago. (Who did that again?) I'm pretty fond of the Barenaked Ladies/Sarah McLachlan version of God Bless Ye Merry Gentlemen, too. And the Peanuts theme song always makes me think of Christmas- Gary Hoyt did a really kickin' cover of it on the radio this morning. So... yeah. And I have a guilty pleasure in The 12 Pains of Christmas, though I wouldn't want to hear it more than once a year or so.
(I might be along in preferring the Madonna version of Santa Baby, though... rowr!)
EDITed to add The Kinks' Father Christmas, 'cuz I can't believe I forgot it the first time around.

I'm currently a fan of "Merry Christmas from the Family." Country song. Hysterical. Hear it. It's great. Oh dear Lord. I thought I was alone in the world when it came to this song. It's by Robert Earl Keen. My family practically worships this man. It's insane. I love No Doubt's "Oi to the World", and my younger sister is going to go truly "punk-rock" when she serenades her fellow AIG students with it on the final open-mic day before Christmas break...

A guitar instrumental of "Deck the Halls" (by Ted Nugent, I think) That version of Deck the Halls comes from volume two of Merry Axemas, a slightly-difficult-to-find but-worth-the-effort compilation of (you guessed it) rock guitarists doing christmas classics. The first volume is better than the second, but they both do a good job of providing traditional yet new and funky Christmas cheer. Merry Axemas: A Guitar ChristmasMerry Axemas, volume 2: More Guitars For ChristmasPersonally, I recommend The First Nowell by Eric Johnson, Amazing Grace by Jeff Beck, and the Silent Night Jam by Joe Satriani (all v1).

Manheim Steamroller is 'da best' and the grinch song is like the most awesomest song ever. Also, I apoligize for any crappy typing I make. Just tired/lazy. The merry axemas thing was really cool. I enjoyed listening to the little sound bites.

Boy, do I feel stupid. I forgot to add that it wouldn't be Christmas without listening to Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker.

has anyone heard the Run-DMC Christmas song? I just heard it today, because I work in an elementary school, and they played it on the P.A. It's a Christmas song, and all the kids are into rap, so they love it. It's pretty cool.

The Carol of the Bells. I don't care who performs it, I just love that song.

Mr. Mackey from South Park did the best version of Carol of the Bells I've ever heard. M-kay.
