Oh. OH, it's on now. I've got a bone to pick with you, my fellow Mutant. You done really did it this time, yessiree-bob. [/b] Instead of the lush opulence of first-class quarters on a ship, the story takes place in working class England (or Scotland? I’m not sure).[/quote] In that single, fatal mistake, you manage to offend all Scots, by implying that you thought that might be from Sheffield, and everyone from Sheffield by implying that they might live in Scotland (Hi Souldark, if you read this ). Why does that affect me, you cry? Hopefully, diagram number two will hold the answer... Thats practically my home town!! I've walked down the very streets in that film on my way to work. So just you wait. The very next time I get to make a vague generalisation about, you know, the place where you live - just count on it, Missy! - Rich PS - A steel down gone bust? Well yes, Sheffield is a steel town (In fact, our local and highly decorated Ice Hockey team are the Sheffield Steelers) but 'gone bust'? Or perhaps 'still the largest producer of raw steel in the country, and one of the 10 largest cities in the country'. Oooo, I'm so mad <----This face shows how mad I am.

Okay, but in Lissa's defense, Robert Carlyle's originally from Glasgow. Maybe his Sheffieldian (?) accent wasn't quite up to par? Hmm. Michael Palin's from Sheffield, now that I think about it. Not that it matters. And everyone knows the Steelers are from Pittsburgh. Sue

I'll have you know (and I say this to distance myself from "Missy", who hates it when you call her that, by the way)... when I read Lissa's review last night, I told her that I knew it was set in Sheffield, which was relatively close to Manchester, which was definitely NOT in Scotland. But, I was too late...

Sue: The correct accent round these parts is a 'Yorkshire' accent, and actually, the accents in TFM are essentially perfect - I can't see how someone could confuse it with a Scottish accent at all; but then again, I think everyone who lives anywhere south of Virginia in the states sounds the same, so what do I know? Very little, it seems. Also, my Steelers would whup your Steelers at Ice Hockey any day. Sadly, your Steelers just got done whupping my Raiders on Sunday, so any victory would have the dark and bitter taste of defeat about it. Duckie: I'm not trying to have a go at your lovely wife, duckie, honestly But round these parts, we don't get much exposure to film, and since Scotland already has Trainspotting, I just wanted to make sure we got our 15 minutes of fame too! Missy! - Rich

HAHA! My secret plan has worked! Discussion on the Mutant Forums!!!!! Riiiiiiight.... Okay, Laddie.... First of all, your Steelers probably COULD beat our Steelers at ice hockey, because our Steelers are a football (American football) team. I don't know how they'd do on skates. I could come up with some elaborate defense, but the truth is I WAS lazy and didn't bother to check, and Sue's right- I guessed Scotland might be a possibility because of Robert Carlyle. Don't want to be thinking that everyone with an accent comes from England! So, sorry about that. Especially since I just explained the situation to my office mate and he laughed his butt off at me and TOTALLY took your side. Apparently geek solidarity only goes so far. Especially since he just told me to say "England, Schmengland, Scotland, whatever." I'd think he wants me dead, but it's not like I've got a window view or a better computer or anything. But in my defense about the steel town gone bust thing- you've gotta admit that that's how the movie portrays it. It starts with an outdated news clip showing how prosperous Sheffield was, then the words "20 years later" scroll across the scene. The characters constantly bemoan the lack of work around... "You found any work?" Dave asks. "No, not much about, is there?" "It's the factory band. They're still going." "About the only thing around here that is." However, if the next time I'd like to do a movie on a British town and need to do some fact finding, feel free to comp me for a business trip over, and I'll be completely accurate!!! By the way- I just AMAZED my office mate by giving him one of our cards. He was amazed at our level of geekdom. Man, we're good! AH! He's heard of us!!!!! And not through me! (Although he'd yet to check out our site.) But still!!!!!

My dad is from Whitehaven, Cumberland (or whatever it's called now or back then), and there's a family castle on my mother's side of the family...not as interesting as my Scottish friend who claims her clan were cattle thieves.
Rich, if you live around Sheffield, are you a Northerner or a Southerner?

actually, the accents in TFM are essentially perfect - I can't see how someone could confuse it with a Scottish accent at all Well, sure, because you LIVE there. A lot of North Americans (myself emphatically NOT included) can't tell the difference between an Englishman and an Australian. I can even pick out South Africans. But a lot of people can't. Don't want to be thinking that everyone with an accent comes from England! Wait, in the movies, EVERYONE foreign has an English accent! Especially the Imperial Navy! And "from space" is as foreign as it gets! What were we talking about?

Lissa: I know the your Steelers are a Football team because I listened to them heartbreakingly beat the Raiders on Sunday with 0:07 left in the 4th quarter. And, to be fair, I'd give PITT good odds on beating our Steelers on the ice as well - our copies of your sports bear the same resemblance as your remakes of all our good sitcoms As for the whole joblessness thing, its been a while since I saw TFM; however, given the setting (early 90's) it's true there was a shortage of blue collar work at the time - no more, however. So I guess I'll let you off there Loulabelle: I can answer your question with yet another informative map. Pooly: The Imperial Navy all have English accents not because they are from space, but because they are the heart and soul of evil. Once you attain that moral emptiness, the British accent manifests naturally. Now, back to my plans for world domination. - Rich

Hahaha... oh SNAP, Lissa-girl! You got SERVED! Naahhhh... only if I wrote the sitcoms! -I- write much better than most of that trash, so I'm not remotely offended. Rich is quite right. I'm MUCH more offended he would say anything remotely complementary about Pitt. Between being a Penn State graduate and a Philly resident, that's just... just... Oh, who am I kidding? Sports schmorts. If you aren't kicking someone into a bloody pulp, I really don't much care about it. I'm just annoyed that that's a much wittier response than I came up with. ----- Saves this space for midnight tonight when she comes up with the much funnier retort. -----

BUT, I will admit that when the Raiders Nation generously cheered for Brett Favre in the Packers-Raiders game last season (the day after Favre's father passed away) I was mightily impressed. Touched even. But the Vikings should all break their legs. Sue

Oh, and by the way... we root for the Eagles here in Philly, not the Steelers. They're from waayyyyy over on the other side of the state. That's at least as far away from us as Scotland is from Sheffield... ;D

I always enjoyed catching new shows on the BBC when I was in London, then seeing the Americanized versions over here some time later. But, the one thing I couldn't get into was watching football in the UK - when they showed the NFL games on Sunday nights, they would cut out a lot of the footage. A 3 hour game reduced to 30 minutes? Only showing two passes from an 11 minute drive? Is it still that way? it just wasn't the same experience as becoming a couch potato at noon, and then finally getting up off the couch at 11PM, to go to bed...

My unhealthy fascination with nuclear holocaust flicks + The fact that Rich lives on or about Sheffield = Somebody should review Threads.
