Hey, gang. I thought it was time for a thread devoted to video game quests; by which I mean something above and beyond your average "I got Halo 3 for my birthday last week and I'm already 74% done!" To clarify: this isn't a place to talk about how you beat one random game. The purpose of this thread is to discuss, vent, encourage, swap stories, and yes, brag about your accomplishments in something that has become epic in your mind, a true feat of video gaming. There are a couple of different scenarios this might apply to:
For instance, instead of beating Final Fantasy XII, maybe you're committed to beating ALL Final Fantasy games. That would most definitely qualify as a quest, so tell us about it. Lay out the terms of your personal self-challenge: are you going to beat just the numbered games? Are you including Tactics, or Legends, or Mystic Quest, or Crystal Chronicles, or (God help you) Chocobo Racing? Do remakes count, or are you a purist who will only beat the original or an exact port? Set your rules at the beginning and stick by them.
Or maybe it's just one game, but a game that is your personal Holy Grail. Was there a Nintendo game you could just never beat when you were a kid that's been festering in the back of your mind for the last 15 years? Well, now's the time to lay that demon to rest. When I was a kid I could never, ever beat Zelda 2 or Super Mario 2. But when we set up a Nintendo at my then-girlfriend Lady Luck's apartment a few years ago, I finally took down Dark Link. And just last year, the Virtual Console allowed me to hand Wart the beatdown he so richly deserved. So what's your quest, young Jedi? Tell us what video game albatross is hanging around your neck, and whether you have plans to get it off anytime soon.
Does that make sense? The purpose is both to get your quest out there (because once you've commited to something on an internet message board, that's like a binding contract), and for us to ooh and aah over each others' feats. Maybe you're planning on beating all of the "main" Mario games, in which case we'll give you lots of props and support. Maybe you're planning on beating EVERY game Mario has ever appeared in, in which case we'll call the men in the little white coats with a straitjacket (but give you lots of props and support as you're being dragged away). Whatever it is, don't confront your labors aloneā¦ share!
For me personally, last year saw me downloading Castlevania and Super Castlevania IV for the Virtual Console and beating them both. It was a lot of fun, not to mention challenging, but it also set me off on my current mission: to beat every Castlevania game. (If you're reading this, dear... no, not all at once. Just eventually.) The ground rules are this: only games that have seen widespread release in North America and are available for a home console, so no Vampire Killer (only released for MSX, a Japanese system) or Haunted Castle (arcade version of Castlevania, never released for a home system). If different "versions" exist of the same events, I must beat each individual game, not just one of them. (Super Castlevania IV and Akumajo Dracula/Castlevania Chronicles are both enhanced remakes of the original Castlevania.) If multiple difficulty settings exist, I must play on Normal or higher, never Easy. If multiple endings exist, I must get the best one. FAQs and walkthroughs are okay, but no codes or Game Genie. Oh, and no, I'm not including Kid Dracula. A man has standards.
Here's the list:
Castlevania (NES)
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (NES)
The Castlevania Adventure (Game Boy)
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (NES)
Super Castlevania IV (SNES)
Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge (Game Boy)
Dracula X: Rondo of Blood (PC Engine CD / Virtual Console)
Castlevania: Bloodlines (Genesis)
Castlevania: Dracula X (SNES loose adaptation of Rondo of Blood)
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1)
Castlevania Legends (Game Boy)
Castlevania (N64)
Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness (N64)
Castlevania Chronicles: Original and Arranged mode (PS1)
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon (Game Boy Advance)
Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance (Game Boy Advance)
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (Game Boy Advance)
Castlevania: Lament of Innocence (PS2)
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (Nintendo DS)
Castlevania: Curse of Darkness (PS2)
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin (Nintendo DS)
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia (Nintendo DS)
Castlevania Judgment (Wii)
Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth (WiiWare)
Castlevania: Harmony of Despair (Xbox Live Arcade)
Castlevania: Lord of Shadows [+ both DLC quests] (Xbox 360)
UPDATE: Soooo... that takes care of that. With the exception of the cell phone game that I can't get, that's every Castlevania game beaten. Now they'll have something to put on my tombstone, I guess.
