I know some of you must have them! I certainly do, & I'm not feeling too guilty about them to stop me from posting a list (& then of course defending each item on said list):
- Greek - ABC Family's college sitcom about a bunch of sorority girls & frat guys doing Greek Life-related things. The two main characters are biological siblings Casey & Rusty. Casey is the president of her sorority who (it feels like) is always finding her boyfriends in bed with her sisters & Rusty is the geeky freshman who decides to become cool by joining the party frat. As stupid as this show sounds, I'd be lying if I didn't tell you that I'm completely hooked! I'm a sorority girl myself, & it's great to see Greek Life portrayed in positive light in the media, so points for that. A lot of the issues they deal with are the same as some of mine in real life. Plus, Cappie, Casey's ex & Rusty's big brother, is one of the most likable jerks on TV.
- America's Best Dance Crew - MTV's reality show that has hip-hop dance crews from all over the nation competing for the title & some amount of money. It's hosted by Mario Lopez (AC Slater from Saved by the Bell,) & the judges are choreographer Shane Sparks, ex-*NSYNCer JC Chasez, & rapper/dancer Lil Mama. While I hate reality TV in general, ABDC (produced by American Idol judge Randy Jackson) is hopelessly awesome. It showcases a lot of talented performers who might otherwise never become famous & introduced viewers to underground groups with eclectic styles & personalities, from b-boying mimes Jabbawockeez to theatrical modern dancers Fanny Pak.
- Gossip Girl - With a simultaneously awesome & terrible title, this show follows the scandalous lives of the overly-privileged youth living in the Upper East Side of Manhattan while the audience is left thinking about how lowly & boring our high school years were. As the title pretty much states, it all follows the rumors flying around the core group of rich & beautiful kids, which is precisely why I love it. I love watching people with better lives than me in distress! The scandals are probably too shocking & provocative for a couple of 16-year-olds, & yet I can't get enough of it.
- Chuck - A predictable turn of events has a super-computer implant all kids of government information inside uber-geek Chuck's head, so now he must work to fight crime with Sarah, a secret agent who looks like she walked off a Maxim cover, & Casey, a gruff spy played excellently by Adam Baldwin. Again predictably, Chuck falls in love with Sarah, Sarah sees how great a guy he is despite his dorkishness (of which he actually possesses very little; guy is funny, nice, social, & genuinely good-looking,) & Casey just does some silly stuff so we can laugh at his expense. The writers have managed to make the show work surprisingly well, however, & I can't help but like it.
- Degrassi - There is no excuse for this at all. It's a Canadian teen-dramedy that's been in production for what feels like 40 years with a cast of 37 central characters & plots that are often rehashed from past seasons that the writers hope we've forgotten about. (We haven't.) The production is shoddy, few of the kids are talented, & the story can be incredibly over the top. And yet, I can't stop watching it & actually forming bonds with some of the characters. I'm not the only one, either. Kevin Smith is a huge fan of it himself; he's paid homage to it in at last 3 of his films & had a 5-episode stint as a guest star.
