Here's the question:
What are some movies that never happened but you would love to see?
I'm not talking about something that just hasn't happened yet, like Freddy vs Jason 2 or Alien 5 or something. I mean stuff that is never, ever going to see the light of day--either too much time has passed or the director has died or something changed that means there is no chance that it will come to fruition.
For example, I was watching the documentary Hearts of Darkness recently, and they mentioned that George Lucas was going to be the original director of Apocalypse Now. I, for one, would love to see George Lucas's vision of Apocalypse Now.
Similarly, David Lynch, David Cronenberg, and Stephen Spielberg were all offered the chance to direct Return of the Jedi and all passed for various reasons. Those are movies I would kill to see but, obviously, is never going to become a reality.
Ditto with Ridley Scott's I Am Legend and Frank Darabont's script for Indiana Jones 4 that everyone loved except for George.
How about you guys?

Intriguing ideas, all of them. With Legends and Indy 4, it's especially obvious how they might have been better.
Funny you mention Alien; I've always wondered about William Gibson's script for Alien 3. It featured Hicks -- but not Ripley, so it wasn't really an option. Also, what I like about the real Alien 3 is that it completed a trilogy of 3 very different movies. Sequels are too often just clones. Gibson's script was not radically different from Aliens, and btw. quite similar to Alien 4 (maybe it was an inspiration?). So this answers the opposite of your question. Sorry.
What I would have liked to see however is (would have been? Dr. Streetmaker?) a new adaptation of Solaris. Made by someone who respects the novel. It would even make sense to make one (regardless of what we found in the remake discussion): One, there is no such adaptation yet. And two, with modern CGI we have a tool to efficiently show the ocean's inscrutable creativity¹. That is only a fraction of the material, granted, but A) it's one that prevented a faithful adaptation in Tarkowski's times (not that he tried), B) one that does not lend itself to a verbal description, and C) one that visualizes a core point of this -- and other -- of Lem's novels.
¹If you haven't read the novel, I'm talking about the crazy shapes the ocean itself takes on, not the "guests".

A Star Wars prequel trilogy that didn't have George Lucas' greasy fingerprints all over it.
I can live with how the prequels came out, but I just don't have the drive to watch them repeatedly like I do with the original trilogy. It's like the Matrix sequels; they're okaaaay... but they're nothing like the original, so they suffer extra hard.
An intergalactic tale of destiny, political intrigue, mysticism, honour, and conflict should have been a slam dunk, but what we got was just... passable. Too bad.

Speaking of Indy 4, I read once that M. Night Shaymalan either had an idea for the movie or even wrote a full script, but it was rejected by Lucas as "too rich" for Indy. Whatever that means.
Who knows if it would have been any good, but it would have been interesting.

I would have loved to have seen Timothy Dalton do his third Bond film (which I think was going to be set in China and released in 1991).
And, it would have been great if there had been some way to have Sam Neill play Bond a couple of times too. Maybe if Roger Moore had left after "For Your Eyes Only", we could have got in Neill and Dalton before we got to Pierce.
Finally, on the same Bond note, I know Spielberg wanted to direct a Bond film but ended up doing the Indy films instead. A Spielberg Bond would rock.

I'm a big Dalton-as-Bond fan, so I completely agree! But Neill... I don't know. I think I saw his screen test once. I'm skeptical.

I would love to see "Pet Sematary" with Bruce Campbell as Louis Creed. He was originally supposed to play him.

Another Master & Commander movie. These things are hugely expensive, and Peter Weir only makes a movie every three to four years, so it seems unlikely we'll ever see it. Sigh.

I know what you mean about Sam Neill, Dex. I saw that screen test too (I think on the DVD for "The Living Daylights"). But, I've always been a big Sam Neill fan, so I would give him the benefit of the doubt. He probably would have played it a lot like Brosnan.

But, I've always been a big Sam Neill fan, I just realized I hardly know him. But now that I remember Red October... ... I agree.

There was a MUCH better version of the Alien 3 script, with Hicks, Ripley, and Newt returning to Earth and, surprise, nobody believing their story. Meanwhile, Aliens have already infested terrestrial ships, and it's bad news for Earth.
Sure, it would have cost 300 million dollars to do in 1990, but I was willing to believe... believe Hicks and Newt would NOT get cheap ass deaths from a line of rubbish plot that doesn't make sense unless you plug your ears with shredded copies of 'Fight Club'. Cameron did something amazing. Made a sequel BETTER than the original... so what do they do when they make a sequel to THAT? Give it to some HACK who directed music videos. Sure, Fincher went on to make other (some people would say good) films but I will never forgive him or Fox.
Although AVP:R proved how boring you can make an Alien infestation on Earth, I have every confidence either Cameron or Scott could have done it. Even John McTierran would have been a better choice.

Freddy Vs Jason Vs Ash. Would be orgasmic for any 80's horror fan or slasher fan or evil dead fan or fan of badassness in general.

I'd like to see more Baz Luhrmann movies, period. He's only done 4 movies in 16 years: Strictly Ballroom (1992), Romeo+Juliet (1996), Moulin Rouge (2001), and Australia (2008). All four have been stunning (I know I haven't seen Australia yet, it comes out tomorrow. But having seen the trailers and knowing Baz, can you honestly say you don't believe it will rock?) He's rumored to do the Wicked adaptation in 2010, so maybe he's picking up a bit.
