I just finished playing the first God of War. Pretty incredible, great combat system, great story. Its hard to go back to ps2 games because the visuals (in comparison) are pretty bad. But i have a huge backlog of ps2 games i've never played.. picked a whole bunch up recently as they were cheap.

Just finished Final Fantasy II. Weird, weird game. The storyline's pretty basic (3 youths have to overthrow an evil empire), but it's the only game in the main series (that I know of, anyway) without experience points. Your spells (slooowly) increase in power the more you use them, you only increase your max HP by getting injured in battle but surviving, you increase your max MP by using a lot of it in a battle. This leads to weird situations where it's actually to your benefit to attack your own characters, or to use a ton of MP in fights where it's really not necessary. Thankfully, the game has a notorious bug where you can put in the command to cast a spell, have the cursor move on to the next character, then cancel that action and return to the first character, put in the spell again, etc., with every action counting as a "cast" of that spell even though it hasn't actually been cast. You can boost your spells pretty quickly that way, but otherwise it would take frickin' forever. Oh, and the inns don't have set rates, the price per night is contingent on how much HP/MP you need to recover. (One gil per hit point, four gil per magic point.)
I'm glad I beat it for completeness' sake, but not a game I'll be rushing back to anytime soon.

I've heard of FFII's "attack your own troops" system before, hilarious. Technically, though, it doesn't matter if I'm hacking a dire wolf or my buddy, I'm still becoming more proficient with my weapon, right?
I picked up Mass Effect 2 this week - I'm not sure how this made it onto my radar so completely considering I never played the original - and it's pretty awesome. A lot of the stuff that made me love Knights of the Old Republic so much, but with a totally original and cinematic franchise.
Interesting though, it's basically made the jump from a KOTOR-like RPG to a RPG-lite-ish shooter. If that sells it short, don't let it, it's pretty amazing. Plus, I hear if you've beat the original you can import your version of Shepard from the first game, and all the choices you've made carry over and affect the storyline right out of the gate. I don't know how Bioware makes these RPGs with such cascading effects to storyline, and I certainly don't know how they're going to do it for the third game, but I'm pretty impressed so far.

Just got my Xbox back from Microsoft; instead of fixing it, they sent me a new one instead. Which is... good, I guess. Hey, if there's a chance they've worked more of the bugs out of this newer one, rock on!

do you lose the stuff that you'd downloaded to your hard drive?

No, for the simple reason that you don't send the hard drive. They have you detach it first (along with any faceplates, for those who use them) before putting it in the mail.

Borderlands, lately. Yay for me for actually playing something within the first year it came out.
I LOVE the selection of guns, but this game is mind-dehydratingly boring. I've never played a sandbox game so tedious, with such repetitive enemies. Admittedly I haven't even beaten Sledge yet, so there could be more, but so far it's the guns keeping me going.
I also like the game's sense of humor; the way they introduce the characters, the intro for the game itself, and the things my character says when she makes a particularly good shot.

If anybody's interested... I spotted a webcomic that made mention of Valve releasing a free co-op game called Alien Swarm, which you can download totally free on Steam. I've downloaded it, and I thought I'd throw out an invite for any interested folks to join me in trying out (it's really a multiplayer based game). Looks fun! DownloadReview

Mega Man 10. I've got a few more modern games in the queue (Left 4 Dead 2, Ghostbusters), but with grad school and house renovations, I wanted something with minimal story that I could put down quickly if need be, and that could be beaten in a few days.
So far, so good... 7 robot masters down. I do wonder why they eliminated the slide and charge shot in this and MM9, though. I get that they're trying to recapture the old-school vibe, but both of those features debuted in NES games, and it's not like they got rid of Rush. I guess it's just to give Proto Man some advantages.

I am spending far, FAR too many hours (or days or weeks, really) playing Fallout 3. Somehow I kept managing to avoid this game. I'm beginning to think it was a good thing overall, because I'm hopelessly addicted. Who else is ready for New Vegas?

Yay, BCWC is alive!
Re: Fallout 3, I could hardly blame you for falling for this game at SOME point, even if it's now. One of my absolute favourites from last year. Wonderful. Good for you!
Re: Alien Swarm, when you're locked, loaded, and ready, send me your Steam account name (mine is simply poolman), and I'll step you through it, if you haven't already figured it out. It's an absolute blast to play, in my estimation. Good for short bursts (as there's still really only one officially released mission pack, Jacob's Rest) with surprisingly strategic gunplay. Running off on your own to play Arnold absolutely NEVER works in this game. You're forced to stick with your team, and the rewards for doing so are brilliant co-op moments that are seriously fun.

Alive and well, thank you very much. I've been posting here and there.
I finally got it downloaded last night and did some offline practice. Two things of importance when considering playing with me: 1. My internet cuts out constantly (I HATE AT&T!), though I may be able to fix it this week by switching providers. 2. I'm really unused to playing PC games. I think the last "serious" PC game I played was Full Throttle, so at times my mouse tends to fly around the screen like an anime character having an fit.
But if you're brave enough, we'll play together. I'll get in contact once I head over to Cox.
