Some groups I've just gotten into this summer:
- Drive-By Truckers. LOVE them. They're very Lynyrd Skynyrd influenced southern rock, but they have some tender and sweet songs ("My Sweet Annette", set during the Depression) and some very rockin' badass songs ("Let There Be Rock", about some guy growing up idolizing Skynyrd, or "The Company I Keep", which is extremely depressing). There are also some really darkly funny songs like "Zoloft" or "Nine Bullets."
- Kings of Leon. If you read Spin, flip back to the April issue - the one with Kurt Cobain on the cover - and read Dave Eggers' piece about them. He says they bring back perfectly the mood of the 70s to him, and I suppose if I'd lived through the 70s they might do that for me too.
- The Offspring. Yes, I'm an idiot for not really listening to them before. But see, I was listening to Americana in a car with some friends when the driver ditched the car and we got stranded by the side of the road and yelled at by our parents. So it left a bit of an impression on me.

Richard Cheese...This guy is incredible. What he does is lounge, Frank Sinatra style jazz, only he does covers of alternative metal. It's funny to hear him singing angry, hateful lyrics and cursing in a bouncy, smooth, jazzy voice. Some songs to check out: Down with the Sickness, What's My Age Again, She Hates Me, and Come Out and Play.

Arrogant Worms- Comedy
A Canadian group that, at least in my humble opinion is better than Weird Al. Scary Ned is one of my favorite songs ever.

my own tunes. a couple of 'em are here, with more coming: www.misterwah.ca/music.phpjust a word of warning - the tunes are fun, funny and friendly, but also very politically incorrect and sometimes crude. if that's your bag baby, give'r. actually this isn't a shameless plug... I feel lots of shame.

PROBOT- Heavy Metal
Dave Grohl's third band. It's pretty much straight-up, old fashioned heavy metal. Instead of having one regular singer, they bring in singers from other bands for different songs. Some songs to check out are "Shake Your Blood" (sung by Lemmy of Motorhead) and "I Am The Warlock" (sung by Jack Black)

The Darkness' "Givin' Up" is the funniest song about heroin I've ever heard.

First post ever, hooray ;D
Band: Dresden Dolls Genre: Angry girl rock with piano and a crazy drummer. Take Tori Amos, remove any restrain, add a lot more aggression taken out on the poor keyboard. My favorite song right now: "Truce" in which she divides up the globe so she doesn't have to run into her ex-boyfriend. Wouldn't that be the most practical way to get over a breakup? Best line : "Now get off my side of the state"

first I would like to afirm that Arrogant worms are the funiest band out there today. listen to the birthday song and the song about how much Canada sucks (pretty much every other song). Don't worry I'm a Cunuck myself and laugh at them. now for the recomendin
Bella Fleck and the Flecktones - Pretty much any album will do but I suggest there concert album Live at the quick. they are a blend of rock, country, funk, blues, world music, jazz and pretty much every other syle. between classical on the banjo to Amazing grace on bass to a drumatar to playing two saxaphones at once you will hear some of the worlds best musicians playing together. There is also a DVD of the concert.
Tom Waits - never has an artist changed so much in his career. Waits is one of the weirdest and most gifted song writers of our time. He writes poetry to music. he started off singing beautiful, funny great jazzy songs about love and loss and progressed to what is called Macabre Carnival music. You may have seen him as Reinfeild (spl?) on Dracula. He also wrote and sang the soundtrack to One From the Heart. He is also the one talking with Iggy Pop in Coffee and Cigerettes.

* Johnny Boy "You are the generation that bought more shoes and you get what you deserve" * rock (reminescent (sp?) of the 50's) * I don't have a lot of info on the band. I think they released one album and a single for this song (which doesn't seem to be on the said album). They're hard to find! It's rock music with a very catchy sound. You might find it on the bbc radio site (which is a site I adore www.bbc.co.uk/radio/ ) Here's some good show to listen to On radio 1: -Chris Moyles -Zane Lowe On radio 6: -Liz Kershaw -Steve Lamacq Another band I discovered on the bbc is * Sleepy Jacksons "Good dancers" * rock (reminescent (sp?) of the 50's) * Very much in the same bag as Johnny boy...

Name: The Mars Volta
Style: Progressive indie-rock-salsa-punk
Summary: This band is insane. Don't pay any attention to the pretentious, non-sensical lyrics, but listen to the way they're sung and how the awesome instrumentation blends in so well with the words. The singer sounds almost like Geddy Lee, but not quite as nasal. Point is, they're great.

Go out and get the new Tom Waits Album. It's called Real Gone and it's title could not be more true. It may sound like a pile of junk of the first listen but give it time and it will turn into amazing music. favorite song: hoist that rag, or any of the other songs on the CD
