Just thought I'd ask what kinds of albums people have bought lately. Recent additions to my collection are:
The Police - Outlandos d'Amour (on vinyl) Skinny Puppy - Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse (also on vinyl) Satyricon - Volcano Ragnarok - Arising Realm Mr. Bungle - Mr. Bungle Masters of Misery - Black Sabbath, The Earache Tribute
There's a whole mess of other cds that i've bought, but just don't feel like writin' 'em down.

Blues Traveler--Four...$1.50 on half.com, and in perfect condition.
I plan on merging it with my copy of Final Fantasy III, with the intent of opening a time portal to 1994.

Alanis Morissette - So-Called Chaos. I'm starting off my summer RIGHT, with some angry white woman music! I bought this last week, just had a chance to listen to it on Friday. Seems like a pretty solid album, although I wonder about radio friendliness - I didn't hear anything besides "Everything" that I would expect to get much airplay. But then again, just one play so far, maybe a few more will begin to stand out as radio friendly... Speaking of Alanis, she's touring with Barenaked Ladies this summer. This would have been an awesome concert to go to, but it looks like we'll be out of town that weekend :-(

The next VH "best of" double album is supposed to be out this summer. I don't think the Gary Cherone stuff will be on it, but the album is supposed to span both David Lee Roth's and Sammy Hagar's careers. Sammy's got a few new songs on this one. It's a shame that they didn't just release Dave stuff on Vol I and stick to sammy stuff on vol II, rather than repackage much of the first one as disc 1, without Dave's new stuff. Oh well.

Van Halen is supposed to be coming to my town, Toronto, during the summer. I would go see them, but I'd rather see David Lee Roth, or even Sammy Hager live. Unfortunately, I wasn't born when Davey was in the band, and I just recently became a fan of their old stuff...I'm late to the party. btw, "Eruption" is CRAAAAAAAZY!

I grew up listening to early VH, but didn't get a chance to see them until 5150. Sammy's a professional, but I always thought he gave the band more of a restrained feel on stage. Dave was definitely an 80's front man, brought a lot of energy to the band. Not sure what my favorite early VH album is (depends upon my mood) - make sure you don't overlook VHII or Fair Warning, both have some really good cuts on them. And, whenever I hear "Eruption", I just can't picture it being followed by something other than "You Really Got Me". I always thought of it as a killer intro segment for that... but they had to change that on the greatest hits album. Is nothing sacred?

"You Really Got Me" is such an awesome cover, and "Eruption" does flow into it very well. Actually, that's what i like about their debut album; it is very consistent and there aren't any weak tracks...they all just flow from one great song to another.
The only VH albums i own are the two i mentioned already; their debut and 1984, and i plan on buying more of their albums. But I get freaked out when a popular band changes either their lead singer, or any vital members. Some performers just can't be replaced, like Ace Frehley and Peter Criss from KISS, or Sebastian Bach from Skid Row, or David Lee Roth from Van Halen. Maybe it's me being stubborn, but these bands just become weaker when their vital organs get removed. The only good change i can think of is Brian Johnson replacing Bon Scott in AC/DC, but there's probably others.

I definitely agree with you there... changing the lead singer can be like removing a vital organ. Sometimes the transplant works, but even then the result is still different. And then, sometimes the patient dies.
Genesis is a great example of what can happen... I love the Peter Gabriel era, still liked the Phil Collins-fronted version... but, don't get me started by bringing up Ray Wilson as their lead singer!
And then there's Journey... nothing like just grabbing a replacement that sounds like Steve Perry, and then trying to pawn it off as the band that brought you such classics as "Separate Ways".

Continuing on the replaced musician trend, I think most people agree that replacing Paul DiAnno by Bruce Dickinson is the best thing that could have happenned to Iron Maiden. No one knows what Pink Floyd would have been if Syd Barrett hadn't gone crazy bu David Gilmour was an awesome replacement and one of the greatest guitarists ever. Then there are band like The Cure who have a main leading man and remain good whatever back players they've got and then disband when the main man dies or quits. I also always thought that Led Zeppelin took an awesome decision disbanding after Bonham died - the group wouldn't have been the same without his punishing drumming.
