Words fail me...
Can anybody think of another actor who maybe even looks remotely like Shatner?

Just perused Entertainment Weekly's interview with J.J. Abrams, Leonard Nimoy, and Zachary Quinto, which was interesting, but what caught my eye was the poll in the sidebar. A casual internet poll asked who would be the choice to play the young Captain Kirk.
Fourth place was Luke Wilson with 11% Third place was Shia LeBouf with 16% Second place was William Shatner with 18% (yay for the Old Guard!) But the winner by a huge margin, 52%, was Nathan Fillion. Yeah, That-Guy-From-Firefly.
Now any excuse to gaze upon Mr. Fillion works for me...the man's always fun (among other things) to watch. But Kirk? I don't know. One, he's so firmly fixed in a lot of geeks' minds as Malcolm Reynolds that I don't know if he could make the jump. Two, much as I love him, considering that they cast such a young-looking actor as Spock, I think Fillion may be too old to play a younger-than-Spock Kirk. Three...this is gonna sound weird, but...the voice. I love his voice, don't get me wrong, but I can't imagine Kirk-Lines coming out of his mouth. Granted, that can be worked on, but still.
I'd like to think he could do it (he's got the cocky thing down), but in reality...no. I just can't think of any young actor who could really pull the role off at the moment.
And they are supposed to start shooting in November...

This is confermed by the Hollywood Reporter John Cho and Simon Pegg have been cast in Star Trek as Sulu and Scotty. the following is also from the above source: Already on board are Zoe Saldana as Uhura and Anton Yelchin as a young Chekov, the Russian-born navigator, as well as Zachary Quinto as a young Spock. Leonard Nimoy, who originated the role of Spock, is on board as well. Chris Pine is in talks to play the young Kirk.

We have a Kirk...the aforementioned Chris Pine. (I keep reading it as Chris 'Pike', for obvious reasons.) I'm a little nervous...when his movie credits list Lindsay Lohan movies...but I'm trying to keep an open mind. Karl Urban is onboard as McCoy. My first thought was "Huhwha?," but upon further consideration, it could work. Full article and current cast list here.

Oh that's a shame! Is it just the continuity thing do you reckon, or a slight to Shatner, who's notoriously hard to work with?

Oh that's a shame! Is it just the continuity thing do you reckon, or a slight to Shatner, who's notoriously hard to work with? Maybe not so much of a slight as in a 'possible headache avoidance.' They're under enough pressure with this movie...they probably just don't want to deal with him. Even so, it's a shame...I would've liked to have seen Shatner and Nimoy together onscreen one more time...

Just FYI, Entertainment Weekly just rated the casting choices for Star Trek XI...and in their opinion, from worst to best:
Karl Urban as McCoy Chris Pine as Kirk John Cho as Sulu Anton Yelchin as Chekov Zoe Saldana as Uhura Zachary Quinto as Spock Simon Pegg as Scotty Leonard Nimoy as Spock
Eh, I can get on board with that ranking.

I don' think giving Nimoy top honors is entirely fair, there...
