Some I listened to were The Sensitivity Boosters, Dark Fey and Atmosphere. It just struck me funny. But then again, so does that whole Emo thing in the first place. You want quality music, go download Swedish country music.

Can someone explain to me what "emo" is? I hear the term all the time, and I get the general idea from context, but it's still this nebulous thing to me.

Glad Uber answered this, I was confused as well. I had imagined a bunch of guys dressed up like Emo Philips, doing rap... guess I'm just out of touch with the new music!!!

Last night I was in a bit of a classical music kick (for the first couple years, my classical and movie score CD's outnumbered my pop music scores). For some reason, I really had "Rhapsody in Blue" by Gershwin, stuck in my head, so I went through a big runaround to download it, but you didn't hear that from me.
I also listened to Mozart's Clarinet Quintette (former clarinet player here--yes, I was a band geek) and Johan de Meij'sLord of the Rings symphony. The interesting thing about that one is that it was written for a band rather than an orchestra, it was written in the mid-90's (in other words, before the movies came out), and because my high school band played movements I, IV, and V (I told you I was a band geek). Although it's called the "Lord of the Rings" symphony, most of it seems to take place during the first book. IMHO, the best recording is by the Royal Dutch Military Band, but that seems to be out of print now.

My girlfriend recently told me about a new trend: Emo Rap. Sad pale white boys who rap about being sad and lonely. Downloaded some tracks from one group. It was the funniest stuff I'd ever heard. I can't believe I didn't see this earlier. Emo rap. That just conjures up a funny image. It's just so contradictory. I mean, traditionally Rap=Egotistical and Emo=Whiney, so how do you combine the two. Would the lyrics basically be "I'm better than you but why the *bleep* are you winning"? I am now, officially, confused.

I got a one up on the emo rap deal...
Some time ago one of my best friends (who just happens to be from Israel) let me listen to some of the coolest music ever. That's right -- Hebrew White Boy Rap. Can't remember the name of the band for the life of me, but my buddy used to run a night club in Tel Aviv and used to book these guys regularly. Anyway, it was fast-paced Beastie Boys style hip-hop, but it was all in Hebrew. Except for the occasional english curse word. It was awesome.

I like emo, sort of, but emo RAP? This is an entirely new concept for me.
Who else likes the song "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" by The Darkness? You should read their interview on vh1.com, because they say that Aerosmith is awesome, which is awesome. I heart Aerosmith.

Sorry, but this cracked me up Reminded me of an article I read the other day, about the ELF damage to an SUV lot... according to the article, they wrote 'I heart pollution' on one of the SUV's. I can see the discussion just before it went to print: "I heart pollution? Did they write out the word heart?" "Well, not quite... they painted a heart thingie on the SUV." "Then shouldn't it be I love pollution?" "Well I'm not sure, maybe he was afraid of commitment." ... and yet another thread goes off-track...

I also heart the Beatles. ;D I'm listening to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band right now.

Right now, I'm listening to Joni Mitchell and Tori Amos's old stuff. Joni Mitchell is exceptional, especially "One Tin Soldier," "Urge for Going," and "Both Sides, Now." Really, really awesome.

WHY JUSTIN IS VERY UNCOOL STORY #412:
I used to really be into Tori Amos in college -- please don't ask why, my musical tastes are never en vogue -- and I think I about drove my roomie insane with it. I did love her earlier piano work, it was great.
But the realization that I was alone, as a 20-something college guy liking a feminist new ageist musician came to head when I took my roomie to a concert to see her in Pittsburgh. I think we were the only people there who weren't (a) 16 years old, and (b) girls.

Well, I guess that makes me uncool as well, because I've got all 5 of Tori Amos album releases as well. Little Earthquakes is still my favourite, but the newest one, Scarletts Walk, is a pretty fine album as well.
Also, her covers album, Strange Little Girl, has two of the creepiest songs in history on, being her reworkings of Tell Me Why (I Don't Like Mondays) by The Boomtown Rats, and the even scarier cover of Eminem's '97 Bonnie & Clyde.
