Unfortunately, I'm a couple weeks out of date - I have a conflict Monday nights when the eps are on, so I have to go liberate them from the Interwebs before I can watch.
That said, I like what I've seen so far. I certainly don't have the same bitter feelings that SciFiWire had from that article. It's reminding me of the direction it was trying to go towards the end (ie. better part) of season 3.5, so it finally feels a little more linear and a little less here there and everywhere.
I'll get caught up and report back soon, sir!

So I'm now up to date, and getting more impressed.
Ep 7 of this season is probably the best Heroes I've seen since season 1. I don't know if any of you guys are still watching at all, but it really was something.
If anyone's on the fence after the last two years, I'd say stay with it. It's not season 1, but it's full of potential, and seems FAR less prone to swinging back and forth than the last couple of seasons.
**Spoilers**
The Claire/Gretchen thing, while contrived, works well enough. It's not the lesbian fest we were all fearing with the off season news. Claire has an ally that she (by end of Ep 7) knows she can trust, and has conflicted feelings for. It works.
Hiro trying to right Tadashi's suicide over and over again was quite nice ("How many ways can one man photocopy his own bum?"), and the resolution that he only saved him by talking to him instead of leaping repeatedly into the past was great. I am very excited for the return of Charlie, too - she was a fantastic character in season 1 who I think got cut too early.
Tracey's general arc - the choice of returning to life in DC or embracing her powers - is pretty tired ground, but I like the way she tied in with HRM in ep 7. The two of them trying to save Jeremy, only to be utterly shocked at how a small town deals with murderers (I found that plenty powerful). HRM's as conflicted as usual, but Jack Coleman is solid as always.
Sylar's two incarnations are interesting. We have Nathan/Sylar housed with the Carnival, predominantly (but not fully) Nathan at the moment. However, it's Nathan with Sylar's abilities. Matt/Sylar has been less inventive, but still all right. (I guess Matt's wife knows about his powers... when did that happen? I don't remember.) Incidentally, Mohinder has yet to make an appearance this season (and the Mohinder Voiceovers are gone from the opening and closing credits), but Matt makes a phone call to him to try and track him down. Maybe a return soon?
Peter's not been too focal the last couple of episodes, and his story is less interesting. He's also choosing between old life/new life, albeit with the acceptance of his ability (rather than Tracey's usual denial). I'm really not into the deaf file clerk storyline, but who knows where it's all going?
Potentially most interesting is the introduction of Samuel and the Carnival. He reminds me very much of Magneto with his Brotherhood. He doesn't seem evil - certainly not the moustache-twirling villain of season 2/3 Sylar or Arthur Petrelli - but he plainly wants to get his way. The total extent of what that is, exactly, is still up in the air. But they've taken some time introducing him. We only finally get a real glimpse of his full power in Ep 7, and he's definitely a contender.
Anybody else keeping up?
